The Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) participated in the 5th International Fruit Fly Symposium of Tephritid workers from Europe, Africa, and the Middle East (TEAM), which was held from April 15 to April 18, 2024, in Belle Mare, Mauritius. The theme of this Symposium is titled “Food Security: Securing our Fruits for Healthy Consumption”. The event addressed challenges in fruit fly management and its impact on food security. The symposium was featured by keynote presentations, scientific sessions, and panel discussions, providing ample opportunities for networking and collaboration.
Symposium participants included researchers, industry experts, and policymakers from around the world, focusing on innovative solutions and knowledge exchange related to fruit fly biology, ecology, and integrated pest management. Students and staff from Sokoine University of Agriculture actively participated as presenters in scientific sessions and panel discussions. Enhancing food security through improved fruit fly control methods is a key objective, aiming to ensure the availability of healthy fruits for both local and international markets.
Fruit fly control has significant benefits in Tanzania and can be achieved by leveraging integrated pest management strategies such as biological control, the use of attractants and traps, and other cultural practices. By implementing these methods, Tanzania can reduce crop losses, improve fruit quality, and increase market access, benefiting both local farmers and the national economy. Effective fruit fly management ensures sustainable agricultural productivity.
