(Deputy permanent secretary for the Tanzania Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries), Prof. Msalya, G.M. (Registrar of Tanzania Dairy Board) and Prof. Selemani, I.S. (Head of Range Management Section). On the 20th of November, 2023 these members met at the Department of Animal, Aquaculture, and Range Sciences to discuss several issues regarding the development of the department and the national livestock sector at large.
Livestock play a crucial role in the agricultural and economic landscape of Tanzania. They contribute significantly to food security, nutrition, income generation, and employment in both rural and urban areas. However, the livestock sector faces various challenges, including the impact of climate change, diseases, inadequate infrastructure, limited access to markets, and issues related to land use and grazing.
The Tanzanian government has implemented various initiatives to promote and support the livestock sector. This includes efforts to increase access to youth in agriculture, improve animal health, enhance breeding programs, and provide training to farmers in modern livestock management practices. Access to markets and value chains is critical for the growth of the livestock sector. Efforts have been made to improve infrastructure and transportation links to facilitate the movement of livestock and livestock products.
Sokoine University of Agriculture and Research institutions are often involved in initiatives aimed at training experts in livestock production, conducting research in improving livestock breeds, increasing productivity, and addressing health issues. This delegate is among the important stakeholders in the current curricula review exercise in the department to reflect the vision of the university and the government towards livestock and fisheries production.
