Dr. Charles Moses Lyimo

Charles Moses Lyimo (Dr. Sc. Agr.)
Senior Lecturer

Dr. Charles Moses Lyimo is working with the Department of Animal, Aquaculture and Range Sciences, in the College of Agriculture at the Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), Tanzania. He specialized in Molecular Genetics and Genomics, particularly in the areas of Population Genomics, Conservation Genetics and Evolution Studies.

In November 2014, he received a Doctor of Science in Agriculture (PhD) from the Department of Animal Breeding and Genetics in the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences at Georg-August Universität, (Göttingen University), in collaboration with the Department of Breeding and Genetic Resources at the Institute of Farm Animal Genetics of the Friedrich – Loeffler – Institut, Mariensee, Germany. Dr. Lyimo collaborated on SYNBREED (Synergistic Plant and Animal Breeding) research project in studying worldwide chicken diversity during his Ph.D. research work.

He pursued his Bachelor of Science in Animal Science and Master of Science in Tropical Animal Production both from the Sokoine University of Agriculture. Furthermore, Dr. Lyimo’s has professional experience in teaching, research, consultancies, and provision of extension services in the field of agriculture, particularly in genetics, animal breeding, animal nutrition, and conservation of animal genetic resources. He teaches Animal Genetics, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, Pig and Poultry Production, and Applied Animal Nutrition. Dr. Lyimo has attended different mentorship programs for coaching and supervising youth in developing their careers in sciences, leadership, and entrepreneur skills in agriculture-related fields.

At present, Dr. Lyimo has mentored a number of undergraduate students and supervised graduate research projects in the area of biological sciences. He actively participated in several outreach and extension programs that engage with farmers, industry stakeholders, and policymakers to promote sustainable animal production and conservation practices. Dr. Lyimo has also significantly contributed to the development of curricula and training programs that prepare students for careers in animal science and related fields.

Dr. Lyimo has participated in several scientific projects that involve a range of animal species, including livestock, wildlife,  aquatic organisms, and microbiome, in applications to animal and human health for increasing productivity, food security, and conservation. His main research areas of interest are population genomics, animal breeding, animal nutrition, conservation genetics, immunogenetics, and evolution history. Most of the animal species researched are poultry, rodents, small ruminants, pigs, and marine life species.

Dr. Lyimo is a member of the Tanzania Society of Animal Production (TSAP) since 2001, the Sokoine University of Agriculture Academic Staff Association (SUASA) since 2006, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) Alumni since 2011, the World Poultry Science Association (WPSA) since 2013, and the Tanzania Human Genetics Organization (THGO) since 2021.
