The academic member of staff from the Department of Animal, Aquaculture and Range Management, Fredrick Jonas Sammo has been conferred his MSc. in Animal Science (Animal Nutrition and Metabolism) from the Wageningen University and Research (WUR) in the Netherlands. He successfully defended his Master’s thesis in April 2023 and graduated on the 1st of February 2024.
Sammo’s Research topic was on the replacement of Soybean meal and soybean oil by black soldier fly larvae in laying hens. He intensively observed the overall performance and general welfare of layer chickens when fed black soldier fly larvae, and also investigated the intestinal organs of these laying hens.
The use of non-conventional feed for poultry production is tremendously increasing since the scarcity and competition of protein feed resources from animal-derived protein are increasing. This scarcity is from the combined effects of the increased demand of poultry products resulted from the growing human population and rising living standards in developing countries. The inclusion of black soldier fly larvae becomes the potential replacement for other protein sources, as it has high-quality protein and other essential nutrients.
Fredrick Sammo is currently serving as an Assistant Lecturer in the Department teaching a number of courses related to monogastric nutrition, physiology of nutrition, and applied animal nutrition. As an increasing demand for pig and poultry products in developing countries including Tanzania, Fredrick Sammo will have a major contribution in this direction. The Department of Animal, Aquaculture, and Range Sciences is proud to the achievement of Fredrick Jona Sammo for conferred his Master’s Degree and became a very useful resource in the department, Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), Tanzania, and the whole scientific community.
“Congratulations Mr. Fredrick Jonas Sammo”
