The Department Basketball Team (Grinder All Day) Won on the Second Round Playoff Battle

The Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) is yearly running several sports and games tournaments for students and staff to participate in and engage themselves in building their physical fitness, mental well-being, discipline, fostering teamwork, and several valuable life skills. Basketball is among the lovely sports on campus, where SUA invested in constructing standard basketball courts with facilities where students and staff can practice during the day and night.

Among the basketball tournaments, the SUA Domestic Basketball League is highly competitive as the best teams are selected within the students, SUA staff, basketball veterans, and other professionals outside SUA to bring authentic challenges to the competition. This tournament gives opportunities for students to develop their professional skills and showcase their basketball abilities.  Coaches and professional players are always invited to share techniques and basketball tips regarding how to improve in basketball careers.

This year SUA Domestic Basketball tournament, six competitive teams were registered to run the league. The six teams are the Wisemen team which includes SUA staff and other basketball veterans, the Vet Crusaders team led by students from the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, the Cyber Shooters team from the School of Engineering and Technology (SoET), the Bad Hunters’ team combine different departments/colleges, the Alley Wolves team combine different department/ colleges, and Grinder All Day team from the Department of Animal, Aquaculture, and range Sciences (DAARS).

In creating a fixture of six teams registered for the SUA Domestic Basketball league, each team plays five rounds that allow to play against every team in the league. The cyber Shooters team emerged the leading team in the league with 80% score after winning four games. Bad Hunters was the second with 60% score from three games winning. The rest of the teams have 40% scores from winning only two games, but the Wisemen and Grinder All Day teams succeeded in the playoff stage after ranking higher in accumulations of points per game, opponents points per game, and head-to-head records. The leaderboard stands illustrates greater competition from all the registered teams in this domestic league.

At present, the SUA Domestic Basketball League is in the playoff stage to determine the 2024 Basketball Champion. This is the intense and thrilling part of the basketball season where four qualified teams play a series of three games with their seeded opponent to get the best team for the final. On the 3rd of February, the Wisemen team is the first qualifying team to go into the final after winning two consecutive playoff games with the Cyber Shooters team.

The other team pair that went into the playoff stage is the Bad Hunters and the Grinders All Day. Both teams stand an equal chance to go into the final, as each team won one game of the three scheduled playoff hits. On the 3rd of February, the Grinders All Day from the DAARS, successfully won its first playoff game with a small margin by half of a basket at Edward Moringe Basketball Court. The third playoff game will determine which team between Bad Hunters and Grinders All Day will go into the final with the Wisemen team that has already been qualified.

Other famous on-campus sports and games running at SUA are intramural competitions, the Chibunda Cup, homecoming week for all alumni, and several sports Bonanza.
