It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the Department of Animal, Aquaculture, and Range Sciences (DAARS). Since its establishment, the department commemorated its 54th anniversary which makes it one of the oldest departments in the field of animal sciences in the country. The Department is actively involved in teaching, research, outreach, and production in the fields of animal science, aquaculture, and range management. Today the Department of Animal, Aquaculture, and Range Sciences is the home of more than 2000 undergraduate students as well as dozens of graduate students pursuing advanced degrees.
DAARS is one of the five departments in the College of Agriculture of the Sokoine University of Agriculture. The Department has three sections of Animal Science, Aquaculture, and Range Management that serve all related fields in the department. The Department hosts undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in the areas of Animal Science, Aquaculture, and Range Management. The programs offered by the Department provide students with an excellent education. The training and research focus on the production aspects of domesticated animals, aquatic life, non-conventional animals, and feed production. The university operates a dairy farm, which serves as a research and training facility for students and researchers in the field of dairy science. Teaching and practical components of our training program ensure students have hands-on experience through active participation in laboratory and farm practices.
The activities of the Department are guided by its vision “to be a leading unit in the provision of quality knowledge and skills in animal science, aquaculture, range management, and allied sciences” and mission “ to promote development in animal science, aquaculture, range management, and allied sciences through training, research, and delivery of services”.
The Department is recognized nationally and internationally for its excellent research, teaching, consultancies, and extension services in the field of livestock, Aquaculture, and Range Management. Furthermore, several staff members serve on different national and international professional boards in the field of animal, aquaculture, and range sciences. The Department is always open to all people that including scholars, farmers, interconnected industrialists, related field entrepreneurs, and the affiliated international community. The Department also welcomes international students to pursue both undergraduate and postgraduate studies in order to achieve their academic and career goals. We therefore warmly welcome you all, at the Sokoine University of Agriculture in particular to the Department of Animal, Aquaculture, and Range Sciences.
