Prof. Maulid Walad Mwatawala is the Deputy Vice Chancellor – Academic, Research and Consultancy at the Sokoine University of Agriculture.
His professional specialty is Crop Protection. He is the Chairman of the Boards of the Tanzania Official Seed Certification Institute (TOSCI) and the Tanzania Institute of Education (TIE). Prof. Mwatawala has a lot of experience in Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) matters, having served as; a member of the Governing Council of the then Tropical Pesticides Research Institute (TPRI) (2012 – 2016); a member of the Ministerial Advisory Board (MAB) of the then Tanzania Food and Drugs Agency (TFDA) (2016 – 2019) and; Chairman on the Plant Quarantine and Phytosanitary Sub – committee (PQPS) of the then Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries (2016 – 2021).
Prof. Mwatawala has published more than 60 papers in peer reviewed journals. He previously served as the Vice Chairman of the Tanzania Entomological Association (TEA) and the Editor in Chief of Tanzania Journal of Agricultural Sciences (TAJAS).
Prof Mwatawala is an Advocate of the High Court of Tanzania, Commissioner for Oaths and Notary Public. He is a member of various professional organizations such as Tanzania Entomological society, Crop Science Association of Tanzania, and Tephritid workers of Europe, Africa and Middle East
Ms. Jenipher C. Tairo is a Tutorial Assistant at the Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), specializing in Entomology. She holds a Master degree in Crop Science from SUA. Her research interests include the management of fruit flies using both agroecological and conventional methods. She has also explored molecular biology, with a particular focus on the microbiomics of Zeugodacus cucurbitae and Dacus vertebratus.
Ms. Tairo is actively involved in professional organizations and leadership roles. She is the current Deputy Publicity Secretary of the Crop Science Association of Tanzania (CROSAT) since 2022. Before this, she served as the Prime Minister of the Sokoine University of Agriculture Students Organization (SUASO) during the 2019/2020 academic year. In addition, Ms. Tairo is a member of several esteemed professional Associations, including the Tanzania Entomological Society, the Entomological Society of Southern Africa, the Crop Science Association of Tanzania, and the Tephritid Workers of Europe, Africa, and the Middle East (TEAM).
Outside her academic and professional work, Ms. Tairo is passionate about career development for young people, youth empowerment, gender equity, and promoting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields, particularly among underrepresented groups.
Emmanuel I. Nkuwi was born in Singida, Tanzania. He earned his BSc in Agricultural Education in 2014 from Sokoine University of Agriculture and later completed an MSc in Crop Science at the same university in 2023. He joined Sokoine University of Agriculture in 2022 as a tutorial assistant at the Department of Crop Science and Horticulture. After serving for one year, he was promoted to Assistant Lecturer in 2024.
Mr. Nkuwi is passionate about managing major plant pests, including insects and pathogens, using sustainable methods that minimize environmental pollutants and help preserve beneficial flora and fauna. He currently teaches courses such as Organic Farming, Applied Entomology, and Agricultural Microbiology.
Before his tenure at Sokoine University of Agriculture, Mr. Nkuwi worked as a field monitoring officer at Farm Inputs Promotions Africa (FIPS) under the NAFAKA Feed the Future project funded by USAID. Subsequently, he spent seven years teaching science subjects, specifically Agriculture and Biology, at Tambani Secondary School in Mkuranga-Pwani, from 2015.
He has participated in some collaborative research projects financed by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), which have resulted in the publication of two papers
