The Aquaculture section under the Department of Model Training Farm (DMTF) at Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) is committed to nurturing competent professionals who will address the low productivity and profitability of fish farms and support the blue economy policy in Tanzania.
The DMTF is strategically designed to provide students with real hand practices and experience in every aspect of fish farming, from pond construction to fish processing.
This practical approach ensures that students gain comprehensive expertise, covering fingerlings (Nile tilapia and African catfish) production, stocking, natural fish feed production, farm management, harvesting, and market access, preparing them for real-world challenges.
In a recent practical exercise, our students performed a thorough grading and sorting process of Nile tilapia and African catfish, ensuring uniformity and quality for marketing and sales purposes. Using netting and pond draining methods, they minimized stress and injury to the fish, maintaining their health and quality.
During grading and sorting, our students obtained a 5 kg African catfish, with many others averaging 3 kg. Nile tilapia ranged between 350 g to 500 g.
We are excited to announce that we will soon be advertising the sale of high-quality Nile tilapia and African catfish harvested on the spot. Stay updated by visiting our website regularly, as we aim to provide your family with delicious, fresh, and quality fish.
Get prepared to enjoy the best of what our aquaculture section has to offer!
