The Impact of Established Pastures at the Model Training Farm

The Department of Model Training Farm (DMTF) through the Pasture Management Units is showcasing practical livestock husbandry techniques to local communities, emphasizing the business aspect.

This success is largely attributed to the established diverse pastures like Bracharia ruziziensis, Cenchrus ciliarisChloris gayanaPennisetum purpureum, Juncao grass, and Guatemala grass, and more.

As a result, cattle, predominantly Friesian and Ayrshire breeds, have significantly improved milk yield and growth, thanks to feeding on these pastures in the form of hay, silage, and direct grazing.

Despite climate change challenges, the MTF ensures abundant and high-quality pastures, effectively mitigating conflicts with neighboring pastoralists and farmers.

To extend these impacts to local communities, the MTF provides training in sustainable grazing and pasture management practices, along with access to drought-resistant pasture seeds and cuttings.

Act: Whether you’re aspiring to become a dairy or meat producer, seeking to improve your farming practices, or looking to enhance your existing farm’s productivity, the MTF offers invaluable learning opportunities.

Kelvin Senara “I’m holding Juncao grass here, this grass isn’t just ordinary; it’s a game-changer for communities struggling with soil degradation and limited resources. With its ability to thrive in diverse climates and enrich soil fertility, Juncao has the potential to transform barren lands into fertile grounds for agriculture. As a Field Technician, it’s exciting to witness firsthand how innovative solutions like Juncao can empower communities and cultivate sustainable futures.”
