The Government through the National Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH) has allocated a total of 480 million Tanzanian Shillings to four researchers from local universities in Tanzania for their proposed projects. Each researcher has received 120 million Shillings to implement their proposed projects. The benefiting researchers include Dr. Ramadhan Majubwa a Senior Lecturer from the Department of Crop Science and Horticulture and Sokoine Dr. Makarius Lalika a Senior Lecturer from the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at the University of Agriculture (SUA), and Dr. Julius Woiso, and Dr. Mesi Ilomo from the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM). This funding was confirmed by the Acting Director of COSTECH, Dr. Bugwesa Katale, during the presentation of a dummy check to the researchers after they received training from COSTECH.
The funded projects cover research on sardine fish for food security and nutrition, the production of biological pesticides for controlling tomato leaf miner disease, pollution effects on aquatic organisms and humans, and methods to reduce pollution impacts using friendly insects. Another project you can look into is how pollution affects marine life and humans, as well as ways to reduce the impact by using a combination of friendly insects as biological control.
Dr. Katale said that the government funds could have been allocated for other purposes, but the researchers were trusted and each given 120 million shillings to implement the project they had requested. Researchers from Southern and Northern countries submitted 207 manuscripts, of which Tanzanians submitted 123 manuscripts. However, 16 projects were selected for funding, with four being from Tanzanian researchers mentioned above.
