Ms. Grace Christopher Mpinda, a master’s student at the Department of Soil and Geological Sciences, Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), has been honored with the prestigious African Plant Nutrition Scholar Award. Grace is currently pursuing her master’s degree in Soil Science and Land Management, under the supervision of Dr. Nyambilila A. Amuri and Dr. Hamisi J. Tindwa.
Grace’s research focuses on isolating and characterizing phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) from agricultural soils across Tanzania. Her study aims to identify PSB strains that can thrive under various abiotic stresses, such as fluctuating pH levels, salt concentrations, and soil moisture conditions and enhance the bioavailability of phosphorus to plants.
Her work is not only crucial for improving soil fertility and crop productivity in Tanzania but also holds promise for addressing the broader challenges of climate change and environmental sustainability. Grace’s research could lead to the development of effective and eco-friendly biofertilizers that support farmers in achieving better harvests while protecting the environment.
We are immensely proud of Grace’s achievements and look forward to the positive impact her work will have on agriculture in Tanzania and beyond.
